The historic city of Carcassonne is the second most visited place in France. The largest fortified medieval city in Europe, it stands magnificent on its hill 150 metres above the river Aude. Restored in the last century, it is a dream of the perfect medieval city with its three kilometres of ramparts, thirty-five defensive towers, its moat, Viscount's castle and basilica.

Floure is situated in the Minervois, an area well known for its excellent wine. Chateau de Floure offers a magnificent restaurant set in beautiful grounds. To the south of the village lie the Corbieres, a scarcely populated range of hills well worthy of exploration. To the north rise the Montagne Noire and the National Park, the last bastion of the Massif Central. Several historic cathedral cities are within easy reach, including Montpellier, Beziers, Castres, Albi, Narbonne, Perpignan, Toulouse and St. Pons de Thomieres. Access to the autoroute is at Trèbes 3 miles away, and from there it is a quick drive to Narbonne and the Mediterranean beaches at Gruissan and Narbonne Plage – or a 90-minute drive to Toulouse.

Activities (on site and in local area)
The course of the Canal du Midi lies in the Minervois, from Carcassonne via Trèbes to Béziers and Narbonne. A World Heritage site, it is serenely beautiful. The tow-path offers peaceful walks under the plane trees with opportunities for refreshments en route. It is possible to take pleasure trips on the Canal du Midi from Trèbes or Homps.

There is an excellent golf course at Carcassonne. The city also offers good facilities for most sports, especially tennis. Water-sports are available further upstream on the R. Aude at Quillan and Axat. There are opportunities for horse-riding in the Corbières and on the lower slopes of the Pyrenees. Numerous ski slopes exist in the higher Aude valley around Font Romeu and Les Angles in the Cardagne. The Montagne Noire to the north and the Corbières hills to the south offer good walking country, strenuous or otherwise. At the time of writing, bicycles may be hired locally.

There are several excellent restaurants in Carcassonne itself and many more in the surrounding area. You will find most of them written up by earlier visitors in the house’s travel journal. Good open-air markets are held at least once a week at Carcassonne, Lezignan, Mirepoix and Revel, and the frequent village jumble sales ‘vide-greniers’ bring out a huge range of wares with many bargains.

The Minervois enjoys the Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and mild winters. For house-hunters it offers a variety of small villages in the plain or on the hillsides, each with its own character and community.
